Build simple storage out of your wall studs

May 5, 2016

My oldest son is obsessed with legos.  And I mean obsessed.  We were running out of places to put the ones that he had built, and he likes to take miscellaneous pieces and construct random things.  He wanted somewhere to put them until he got tired of them.  I needed a decent amount of storage and I didn’t feel like building a bunch of shelves, so I utilized the hollow, uninsulated wall between his and his sisters’ room. First, I…

Beef up that kitchen island and brighten up your kitchen

April 22, 2016

When we built our house about 4 years ago, we went with darker floors, darker cabinets, and darker blinds.  Looking back, that was probably a poor choice.  My wife had been wanting to brighten up the kitchen a little by painting the island white, sort of like an “accent” piece for your kitchen.  I thought about how I wanted to do it, and I’ll take you through my steps.  She not only wanted it brighter, but she wanted it “beefed…

Build your own antique finished coffee table for less than $75

April 13, 2016
IMG_1609

Anyone that has purchased furniture lately knows you can spend a lot of money in a little amount of time.  A good-sized coffee table can run upwards of $1000, depending on where you shop.  We used to have a large ottoman in front of our couch.  Great for putting up your feet, not so great if you want to set down a drink or write something (or if you are kids; build legos).  I didn’t feel like spending a fortune,…

Build yourself a bar, with a kegerator built in

April 7, 2016

Like many men, I love beer.  I mean REALLY love beer.  There is nothing better than a nice cold pint poured from a tap at your favorite watering hole or restaurant.  About a year ago I was finishing my unfinished basement and decided I wanted a bar, but I wanted to build it myself, and I definitely wanted to plant a stake in the craft beer craze. I searched long and hard for any sort of plan or starting place,…

Mudroom lockers

April 6, 2016
IMG_1071

When we built our house we had a huge mudroom closet put in instead of a walk-in butler’s pantry.  We felt like this would be a nice place to put shoes and coats when you come in from outside.  Definitely a useful space, but the installed wire racks that were in there were a pain, and the coats on hangers were ruining the paint on the walls. I browsed around a bit and figured out that I wanted to make…

Turn an ordinary wall into a rustic accent wall on a budget

April 6, 2016
IMG_1652

We were going to make one of the walls in our eat-in kitchen a very simple accent wall.  My wife saw a few posts on Pinterest and decided she wanted wood planking as the accent in lieu of painting it a different color.  After some research, and some sticker shock at how expensive the wood, or the “stick on” variety of that stuff is, it was back to the drawing board. One day were walking through a home improvement store and browsing…

Getting started

DSC_0181_966_EDIT

Super new to the whole blogging thing, but I’m going to give it a shot.  Essentially I am going to attempt to put some of the things I have built out here, with some fairly detailed instructions on how to build them.  As I build more things, I will add step by step instructions and pictures for you to follow.  I’ve enjoyed doing this over the past couple of years, and I hope some of you take some things from…
